Our Rustic Red pays tribute to the struggles The Kennet and Avon canal endured to stay open, fondly known as the K&A. This beautiful waterway today is a family favourite, home to a series of peaceful towpaths perfect for walking or cycling. However, this idyllic haven hasn’t always been in such good shape and has only been brought back to life in the past few decades. It was the tireless work of volunteers who were able to keep the canal afloat. In 1724, the River Kennet was made navigable from Reading to Newbury, and by 1727 boats could reach as far as Bath, but water supply soon became a problem and in 1812 a steam engine was installed at Crofton. Despite its impressive length, traffic never accounted for more than 6% of the total and the waterway was never prosperous. The canal fell into disrepair and parts became closed to boats. It was only due to the waterway enthusiasts and passionate locals who restored the canal to its former glory. In 1990 the Queen officially re-opened the canal, allowing it to thrive and become the national treasure it is today. The Kennet and Avon canal today has an overall length of 87 miles, made up of 2 stretches of navigable river linked by canal. Rustic Red is a deep crimson red which pays tribute to these struggles in its derelict state, and also represents the beautiful rural landscape that is seen sailing down the stream today. Rustic red is the deep sunsets, the lively carnation and the sweet nectarine. The waterway has truly been transformed into something magic.
